We bought the house from two pensioners who did not have the opportunity to work so hard with the garden. It took us two years to clear and clean before construction could begin.
In year two, we drained the house, which resulted in us getting large amounts of filling material left over, as well as a larger amount of large stones. The day my friend was to pick up a larger quantity of stone, the heavens opened. This resulted in the entire driveway being demolished. We have not started this project with...

Wall & patio construction
After the drainage
After the drainage, spring came and the plot looked like a clay field in many places. We took the opportunity to dig out a number of thorny bushes that stood near the house.
The wall takes shape
The wall at the front took about two weeks to build. With a bit of luck, we got some help from a digger who moved a lot of stone and rough dug the ground.
Curbs & new lawn
After the drainage, large amounts of soil and rock remained. I got help moving this. The day my friend came with the big tractor, the sky opens and the ground becomes soft. The result is that he almost overturns the tractor and the entire driveway is destroyed.
After a bit of improvisation, the shape of the driveway turned out perfectly okay. Now there is finally a clear line between gravel and grass.
I had quite a bit of trouble with the bend as I didn't have the opportunity to cut the curb.

Wall no. 2 in place
After a lot of digging and moving soil, the wall is finally in place. The first step was a step that is 1050mm wide and the remaining steps are 700mm. This turned out really nice because the masonry blocks on each side of a 700mm step line up with 1050.
We are waiting to sow grass as we start a major renovation project of the house in June. Played with the idea of having a clear level on the left side when going up the stairs. The lower region would perhaps hold a different type of plant than just grass.
Now all that remains is to build:
- garden land for potatoes
- one more wall at the back to create two clear levels at the back
- sow/roll grass
but as I said, you are never done as a home owner.
