Stone walls

Stone walls are a construction with a long history and can be found in many different designs in terms of materials, construction techniques and forms. Today, we mainly build so-called masonry walls, i.e. walls with a binder in the form of mortar. Older constructions of stone walls are usually cold masonry or dry masonry. That is, stacked stones or blocks of natural stone without mortar or binder, or with binder.

Single wall, double wall and shell wall

The classic stone wall was erected cold-walled from field stone. They were built based on several different techniques - single wall, double wall and shell wall are three examples where the last two are of the double wall type. The single wall is the oldest stone wall. It was created with larger stones for the first row, and then smaller stones were placed in layers on top. The construction of the double wall instead consisted of two outer walls with larger stones and a filling mass of smaller stones in between. It gave a more stable girder yard in comparison to the single wall.

Stone wall and gable yard in classic vintage

Do you want to bring home the close-to-nature feeling that brings to mind the countryside? Then a classic gable garden that is cold-walled or dry-walled may be something for you. Build the stone wall with beautiful natural stone , irregular stone or hewn. Field stones, cobblestones or rough wedged blocks of granite or slate stone are some options. An irregular stone gives a more traditional stone wall, while raw wedged stone gives a wall in a somewhat more orderly style. In addition, it is easier to build stone walls and fences with cut stones.

In a way, cold masonry is very simple, but requires time and finesse to get a nice result. For assembly, not very many tools are needed and stacking pebbles is not very heavy. Then it certainly takes time to sort the stones and stack them well for the masonry. This is true craftsmanship and deserves time.

Stone wall in concrete is affordable and beautiful

The most common type of stone wall that is built today are concrete walls . Concrete blocks are cast and basically consist of rock material, cement and water. They can differ greatly in appearance based on color, shape and treatment.

Build a natural stone wall in the garden

Another option of masonry is to build a stone wall in natural stone. With bricks in, for example, granite or slate, you give your garden an exclusive feel. Choose a raw wedged stone block in the form of a block stone wall for a more natural and mountainous look, or a blasted granite stone for a modern and stylish look. You can also build a stone wall in natural stone with leca blocks and then cover it with beautiful wall cladding . In this way, you don't have to feel locked into certain formats and dimensions, but can completely control the size of your wall, size of cladding and set your own design.

If you decide to build a natural stone wall, it is also a nice option to let a stone staircase in solid granite block steps create a passage in your wall.
